About Us

Widnes Cricket Club was established in 1865 by a James White and a group of young men, meeting at the George Hotel in Waterloo Road and first known as Woodend Cricket Club, until 1874 when it changed to Widnes Cricket Club.

The first two seasons were played at Ditton Road alongside the McKechnie Brothers works before moving to Locket Farm, off Peelhouse Lane. With the town of Widnes quickly growing another move became necessary this time to Lower House Lane, the present home of Widnes Vikings RLFC and the Cricketers Arms pub.

In 1932 the search was once again on to find a new home for Widnes Cricket Club, to make way for housing and eventually a field on Beaconsfield Road, our present home, was chosen and after tremendous fund raising efforts the Club bought the land outright for the then not inconsiderable amount of £1,200.

The Club originally played in the West Lancashire League but as we became increasingly successful we moved up the divisions and through the leagues to play in our present league – the Cheshire County Cricket League and currently in the highest division being the ECB Premier Division.

The Club has had some great successes over the years and had the pleasure of some great players such as Johnny Briggs of Lancashire and England and overseas players from Zimbabwe, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand and the West Indies, many of whom have gone on to represent their countries at Test level, most notably Grant Flower of Zimbabwe.

Today the Club is focused on providing the very best facilities and forging close community links in order to encourage local youngsters to get involved in the sport of cricket and to represent the Club at the highest levels possible.

Off the field we are we are extremely accessible with modern disabled facilities. We also boast a large high definition screen that can accommodate all multimedia applications and also show all that Sky and Viasat have to offer, including all Premier League football matches.

We are also represented within the town by our snooker and darts teams with three high quality tables and facilities to host large darts competitions.

We are available for hire for most functions, including weddings and our catering arrangements mean that all tastes can be catered for.

We are a members club run by a committee of members and memberships, at very reasonable rates are available, so please feel free to visit our club and see what we have to offer.
