On Friday night in the Widnes & District Darts League, the Widnes Cricket Club Cup Finals sponsored by Widnes Cricket Club and played at Widnes Cricket Club.
The first quarter final, Alan Magee opened up the Halton Stadium A account against the Widnes BC A A, but Scott Grady who looked down and out held on to make it a game apiece. The Bowler took the lead briefly through Joe Batty, but Joe Kelly struck back to make it 2 games each. With all resting on the final game Kenny Murphy edged out his opponent to put the Stadium A team in to the semi’s.
The second quarter final, the Widnes BC B A conceded the first two games to the Goldmine A as Brad Fleming held firm to open the account followed by a 9 dart display from Lee Hayes. Ian Argent pulled a game back but to no avail as Jack Dunn put the game beyond reach and Sean Bell wrapped it all up for the Goldmine A.
The third quarter final, saw Andy Davies nudge the Farnworth SC C into an early lead, but there opponents Halton Stadium B levelled through Ste Barrow, and went on to romp through, taking the remaining three games and the contest through John Killkenny, Joe Price and Colin Rigby.
The last quarter final, was nip and took between the Ball A and the Millfield B, with the Millfield taking the first in 15 darts by Ian Wall, but the score was soon levelled through the Ball’s Karl Whitfield. It stayed level after two more games as Martin Ball cancelled out Chris Taylors earlier effort, and with a semi final spot at stake Alan Sutton was the man the hour for the Millfield B as he put them through.
In the semi finals, Halton Stadium A opened with a win through Alan Magee only to see the Goldmine A’s Brad Fleming, striking straight back with a timely 14 dart display, but Tony Jackson put the Stadium ahead once more, as he narrowly edged out his opponent. With the match at stake Joe Kelly looked to have won the match, but with a couple of darts left to play Sean Bell struck to draw the game, but Joe was not to be out done as he quickly took the game on the restart, putting the Stadium A into the final.
The second semi final, saw the Millfield’s Ian Wall take the lead against the Halton Stadium B, but Ste Barrow as in his previous match levelled the score. Billy Fox took advantage of his opponents’ misfortune as requiring the outer bull, John Killkenny hit two inner bulls, and saw Billy Fox nip in to put the Milly ahead once more. However, a 16 dart display from the Stadium’s captain Neil Ward steadied the ship, and moments later Joe Price added the final game to make it a all Halton Stadium final.
In the final, Halton Stadium A took on team mates Halton Stadium B, with the B side taking the early advantage through Barry Stanners, but two in a row from firstly Eddie Dootson, backed up by Tony Jackson, put the A team into the lead. The B team however were not going down lightly as Neil Ward made it two games apiece, yet with both teams vying for the bragging rights as the night ticked down, it was no surprise that the final game was drawn to add further tension. On the restart it was the veteran campaigner Joe Price that showed he still had it as he gave the B team the match and the Widnes Cricket Club Cup.
